Safety Tip #1
Reinforce your garage door and tracks with center supports. Why? About 80% of residential hurricane wind damage starts with entry through garage doors, says the Florida Alliance for Safe Homes.
Safety Tip #2
Bring in anything from your yard that could become windborne, and ask your neighbors to do the same. The greatest threat to your home in most hurricanes is not the wind itself, but wind-blown debris that can break windows and doors.
Safety Tip #3
Be especially careful after a storm passes. More people are injured in a storm's aftermath than during the actual event. The most common culprits: downed power lines, sharp objects and dangerous debris. Be sure you don't use a power generator indoors or any enclosed area. And carefully assess any potential danger before beginning a repair job. Your safety is our number one concern.
Major hurricane expected to hit mainland
The U.S. coastline has an above-average chance of being hit by at least one major category 3, 4 or 5 hurricane in 2008. They estimate a higher-than-usual probability of a major hurricane making landfall on the U.S. East Coast, including the Florida Peninsula, and on the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle westward to Brownsville.
