Learn about Tallahassee Homeowners Flood Insurance

A floodplain is the part of the land where water collects, pools, and flows during the course of natural events. Such areas are classified as Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA), and are located in a 100-year flood zone. Base Flood Elevation is the computed elevation to which floodwater is anticipated to rise during the base flood. Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) are shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and on the flood profiles. The BFE is the regulatory requirement for the elevation or flood proofing of structures. The relationship between the BFE and a structure's elevation determines the flood insurance premium.

Tallahassee Flood Insurance Map:

The Northwest Florida Water Management District's (NWFWMD) Flood Information Portal provides access to view SFHAs mapped on the Effective FIRM for Tallahassee and Leon County. Information provided here is for informational purposes only and the official and latest FEMA FIRM should be consulted for flood insurance and regulatory determinations.

To identify a community's flood risk, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducts a Flood Insurance Study (FIS). FEMA uses the data included in the FIS to create the detailed digital flood hazard map, also referred to as a Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM). The FIRMs outlines some of the community's different flood risk areas, or Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs), and are used when determining flood insurance policy rates.
