Hurricane season begins on Saturday. While most of us know the effects of a hurricane, it can often be hard to forecast just exactly where a named storm will form. Luckily, forecasters have studied the past 100 years of hurricane activities and have found some insightful trends.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Florida is the most frequently hit state in the country, with more than 21 category one storms. The second most likely to hit hurricanes in the state were category three storms (18); category two (17); category four (6); and category five (2).

The research also discovered Miami-Dade County has been struck by more major hurricanes than any other area in the U.S. coastline. The last direct hit to Miami-Dade was Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
