In the Florida summer heat, nothing feels better than a nice dip in the pool- for children and adults alike. Though most of us are aware of the dangers posed by in-ground swimming pools, many parents do not know the dangers of their portable counterparts.

According to a study in the Pediatrics Journal, between 2001 and 2009, 244 portable pool submersion incidents were reported involving children under the age of twelve. 86% of these events resulted in the death of a child. The study also concluded these submersion cases increased 500% from 2001 to 2005, and has remained steady since.

To reduce risks, it’s important to supervise your children at all times- regardless of the type of pool. The authors of the study also suggest for the portable pool industry consider developing a fencing system for their pools, as well as covers and an alarm system to alert when one enters the pool.
