A breast self-exam is something every woman should do once a month at home. Doing a regular BSE (Breast Self-Exam) on your own can be the key to discovering breast cancer in its early stages. Not every cancer can be found this way, but it is a very important step you can and should take for yourself.

According to Susan Greenstein Orel, M.D., "The biggest misconception about mammography is it picks up every breast cancer. In fact, mammography misses at least 10 percent of breast cancer. So if you feel a lump that doesn't show up on a mammogram, bring it to your doctor's attention. Get it evaluated."

A BSE is not recommended for breast cancer screening, but it is important to become familiar with the way your body looks and feels, so you can point out any abnormalities to your physician.

Please note, the warning signs of breast cancer are not the same for all women and the best way to find out is by seeing your health provider. BreastCancer.org has great tips on how to perform a BSE, including checking for unusual changes and when to bring them to your doctor's attention.
