While we’ve undoubtedly stressed hurricane prep and (stylish) shutter shopping here on the blog, there are some other projects you can do around the house as we transition into the hottest months of the year. As a recent Miami Herald article reminds us in its title, “It’s June: Time to Prep for Summer!”
Once you’ve taken care of the most important tasks, such as preparing your hurricane check-list, you can now devote your attention to some more humdrum jobs that will surprise you in how big of a difference they’ll make.
-Get a check-up for your air conditioner. Don’t wait until your source of cool air poops out on you to make sure it’s working properly. Air conditioners require regular maintenance and now is the time to have a professional check the refrigerant levels, clean the condenser coil, replace the filter and calibrate the thermostat of your air conditioner. You don’t want to be left in the dark- or rather, the heat!
-Upgrade to a programmable thermostat. It’s an investment. You can set temperatures throughout the day, so you don’t have to waste cool air when no one’s home. They’re relatively inexpensive and will keep you cool and comfortable when needed.
-Flip the switch on ceiling fans. Make sure your fan is running counterclockwise to create a downdraft during the summer months.
-Repair window and door screens. They should let in fresh air, and NOTHING else! Patch-up damaged screens to kick out unwanted critters and debris for good.
-Install a moisture sensor in your backyard. This nifty device monitors the moisture content of the soil, allowing sprinklers to operate only when water is needed. You’ll prevent overwatering, and help the environment.
Once you’ve completed these little odd jobs, you’ll be ready to kick back, relax and enjoy June!
