A hurricane can be a scary time for us all, including our pets. It is important to have a preparedness plan for not only you and your family, but for your pets as well.

Follow these tips from Animal Medical Center to prepare your pets for a hurricane:

  • Have a safe place to take your pets. Many evacuation shelters do not allow pets, and it can be very difficult to find a pet friendly shelter in the midst of a disaster. Plan ahead and research pet friendly shelters you and your pets can go to if a disaster strikes in your area.
  • Make your pets feel secure. By using a pet carrier and slip-type leash, you can calm and secure your frightened pet. Most shelters require pets to be in carriers and it is recommended to label your pet's carrier with its name, date of birth, breed, sex, medical information, and important contact numbers.
  • Keep an adequate supply of pet food, water, and medications on hand. Be sure to pack at least a week's worth of food and water for your pet. If your dog is on medications, be sure to have at least two weeks of their medications on hand. It is also suggested to apply flea and heartworm preventives before bringing your pet to an evacuation center in case they could be exposed to mosquitoes and fleas.
