October 9th-15th is the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) "National Fire Prevention Week". According to the NFPA, three of every five home fire deaths in the United States result from fires in homes without functioning smoke alarms or with no smoke alarms at all. This is why the theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Don't Wait, Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years."

The NFPA notes only a small percentage of people know how old the smoke alarms in their home are, and how often they need to be replaced. As such, they advise for smoke alarms to be replaced every ten years. To find the age of your smoke alarm, check the date of manufacture located on the back of the alarm. We highly suggest for smoke alarms to be installed inside and outside of every room in your home. In doing so, you can cut the chances of dying or becoming severely injured during a home fire in half.
