When heading off to college, safety should be a priority for both parents and students. There are several ways to keep yourself and belongings secure by making good decisions and using available resources. Staying safe on your college campus doesn’t have to be complicated. Keep these safety tips in mind:
Keep an eye on your belongings: When on campus, remember to keep your belongings close to you and never leave them unattended. When you are constantly surrounded by so many people, it’s hard to notice when things go missing.
Lock your door: It doesn’t matter if you are just running down the hall. Always keep your dorm or apartment door locked for your protection. Keep your room keys on you at all times and if you ever misplace them, report it and get your locks changed.
Keep emergency numbers handy: Be sure to save your school’s security and emergency numbers in case you ever need them. It doesn’t help much to have to Google search your school’s numbers during an emergency.
Participate in all drills: Being inconvenienced is never a reason to skip out on a drill. Real emergencies don’t come at convenient times, which is why you are never told about them in advance. It doesn’t matter if you’ve just stepped out of the shower, or are too tired to get out of bed. It is very important to participate in a drill so you’ll know what to do in the event of a real emergency.
Use a buddy system at night: Whether you’re going out for a jog, study session or party, always try to bring a friend. You are less likely to fall into danger with a group of people than if you were alone at night.
If you see something, say something: This is the most important thing you can do to help others, not only on campus, but anywhere in the world. If you notice suspicious activity, it is your civic duty to report it, whether it involves you or not. Remember the 5 W’s: Who, What, Where, When and Why.
Among many, these 6 things can be done with minimal effort to avoid problems during the school year. There are also many things you can do to increase safety on your campus by speaking to administrators and getting involved with the safety programs they may have to offer.
