As schools let out for the summer, water-related recreational activities are at the forefront of family fun. As such, safety in and around water should be the main priority. According to poolsafety.gov, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children ages 1 through 4.
In honor of National Water Safety Month, Florida Peninsula would like to share a few water safety tips for you and your family:
- Teach children at a young age about water safety and how to swim.
Enrolling your children in swimming lessons from a young age will provide them with the water safety skills they will need to become confident swimmers. Several communities offer swim lessons. Look online to find a program which best suits the needs of your family.
- Never leave your child unattended near water.
Children should be supervised at all times when in or near water. If your children are playing near the pool, they still need your attention in case of an accidental slip or fall.
- Pool toys are not life-saving devices.
Swimming aids such as water wings or noodles are fun toys for kids, but should never be used in place of a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devices (PFDs). Remember to remove all toys from the pool, as they may attract young children to the pool area leading to an unintentional fall.
- Learn and post CPR instructions near all swimming locations.
If a drowning is to occur, every second counts. It only takes four to six minutes without oxygen for severe brain damage or death to occur. Knowing CPR and rescue techniques can be crucial when trouble strikes. Sign up for CPR training online to find a class near you.
We hope you keep these water and pool safety tips in mind when taking a dip this summer. For more water safety tips, visit the National Water Safety Month website.
