Security Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are a time for gathering and celebration. Amid events and travel it’s important to ensure the safety of your family and home. Follow some of our tips below to keep the holidays safe and fun.

Minimize Fire Risks

According to NFPA, home fire accidents tend to spike during the holidays. These fires can be caused by cooking or decoration accidents. Be sure to practice cooking fire safety when preparing holiday meals by monitoring stoves and ovens, keeping the space clean, and turning off appliances after each use. Decorations inside and outside the home should be turned off before going to sleep or leaving the house. Replace any worn or broken cords and loose light bulbs to prevent electrical fires.

Consider Home Security Systems

Whether going away on vacation or staying home for the holidays, having a home security system will keep your home protected during a time when theft and burglary are prevalent. Install cameras in and around your home or consider a smart security doorbell. Most security systems will send notifications to your phone when there is motion detected at your doorstep. Some security systems also allow you to video conference with someone at your door, which is a great deterrent for thieves trying to steal packages.

Protect Your Packages

Online shopping is convenient when purchasing gifts for the family. Protect your delivered packages by having security cameras or insuring valuable packages should they need to be replaced. Arrange to be home during important deliveries or have them shipped to a trusted neighbor or friend who can accept and hold onto them for you. Another option is to ship packages to the store for you to pick up when it’s convenient for you.

Keep Your Identity Secure

Amid frantic holiday shopping and stress the last thing you’d want is a stolen identity or credit card. Keep an eye on your receipts and statements to catch any unknown charges on your accounts. Shop online wisely and only trust reputable websites and shops. As the holidays celebrate a season of giving, scammers tend to pose as charities trying to steal your information. If you’d like to give back this holiday season, contact the charity of your choice directly to find out how you can donate, or volunteer with their organization.

The Gift of a Peace of Mind

The greatest gift you can give yourself is peace of mind. Ensure you have proper coverage should a loss occur on your property and keep the holidays stress free.
