Many Americans celebrating the 4th of July host fun parties, visit the beach, or spend time grilling. While this day is full of festivities and excitement, it can also be hazardous. There tends to be a spike in injuries resulting in hospitalization and property damage around the 4th. To keep everyone at home safe during this holiday, you can follow some of our safety tips below.

Practice Firework Safety

4th of July celebrations usually include fireworks and sparklers, and it’s imperative to know how to safely use them. Watching a professional firework show from a distance is a fun safe option to prevent possible firework dangers near your home. If you are using fireworks at home, always have an adult supervise firework activities, use fireworks in open clear areas away from homes and trees, and keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy in case of a mishap. Keep these tips in mind and find a full list of firework safety tips on CPSC.gov to keep you, your family, and home safe this holiday.

Swim Safely

Pool parties are a fun way to celebrate this American holiday, to avoid any accidents, make sure your family and friends know pool safety rules. Before starting the festivities, check the local weather conditions to avoid putting yourself in danger of storm related accidents. When swimming in the pool, appoint an adult to keep an eye on children present in and around the water.  Make sure to have enough water to stay hydrated and apply proper sunscreen to deter sun related accidents.

Monitor Your Grill

Most spend their 4th of July grilling for their family and friends. Before you start cooking, properly clean any remaining grease on or below the grates. Make sure the grill is always monitored and never left unattended when in use. If grilling at home, keep it away from structures and trees and make sure children and pets stay clear of the area. Always use proper grilling tools and follow the grill’s instructions. Note, ask your agent how your home insurance may cover you should your grill accidentally cause a fire and damage your property.

Watch Your Pets

Many pets are afraid of the loud noises and commotion from fireworks, it can make them stressed and traumatized. Keep your pets inside the house when fireworks start and keep them away from unlit fireworks as they could contain potentially toxic chemicals. Many pet stores sell calming vests or treats to help manage your pet’s anxiety during this time.
