Give Thanks by Giving Back

Wondering how you can help the people of your community this year? Instead of putting all of the focus on the upcoming holidays, here are some ways you can give back.  Feed the Homeless: There are hundreds of different locations you can go to in your area to volunteer your time. A good example would be to search online at Feeding America or any similar website and pledge to be a volunteer. From there you can find food banks and shelters near you.  Donate: Each year, we stock up on food and snacks before having people over for just one event. While out shopping, make a habit of picking up some extra (non-perishable) items to donate. Some people even go as far as to decorate an entire holiday basket to give to a family.  Door Decorations:  If you know of a family in your neighborhood who is less-fortunate (and you think would welcome the support), decorate their door or front porch. A simple wreath or decorative leaves with a card would probably make all the difference to them.  Bake Treats:  While yo ...

How to Carve a Turkey

Are you hosting Thanksgiving this year? As a host, you'll need to know how to carve a turkey and serve your guests. The last thing you want is for you to figure it out, or worse, for them to start chopping away at it themselves. Carving a turkey can be quite simple if you know what you're doing. We suggest you follow these simple steps by Real Simple. 1. Remove the String: Place the turkey on a carving board. Remove the string tying the legs together, using the tip of your knife.  2. Remove the legs and things: Cut through the skin which connects the breast and the drumstick. Slice down until you reach the joint. Using a paper towel, grab the leg and push down, separating the leg and thigh from the bird. Use your knife to slice through the joint.  3. Remove the drumsticks: Separate the drumstick and the thigh by cutting through the joint which connects them. Transfer the drumstick to a platter; set aside the thigh meat on a cutting board to slice later. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the other leg.  4. Re ...

It is Time to “Fall Back”

The clocks will turn back at 2AM on November 6th, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time. Apart from getting an extra hour of sleep, which we all enjoy, here are some things you'll need to know and remember: It will begin to get dark an hour earlier in the evenings. If you have small children, be sure to let them have some play time an hour earlier after school, so their time isn't cut short. You may also want to re-program your outside lights if they are on a timer. Standard time will be used through March 12th, then the clocks will "spring" forward one hour to commence Daylight Saving Time. Although we are living in the smartphone era, if you have traditional clocks in your home, remember to manually turn them back one hour. This includes your stove and microwave clocks, since most of them won't reset themselves. It is very common for people to forget, leaving them an hour behind everyone else. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change their batteries. Nothing is worse ...
