May 15th through 21st is Dog Bite Prevention Week. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs each year. Dog Bites, and other dog-related injuries accounted for more than one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claims in 2014, according to The Insurance Information Institute (III).
Even the most obedient dogs can bite when they become frightened or defensive over their food and toys. A majority of dog bites can be avoided with proper education. Be a responsible dog owner by taking the following steps as recommended by the Insurance Information Institute to reduce the risk of your dog biting someone:
Do your research to find a suitable dog breed for you and your family by consulting with a professional veterinarian or animal behaviorist.
Children are the most common victims of dog bites. Do not leave infants or young children alone with any dog, and discourage children from disrupting a dog while they are sleep ...
