Why You Should Have Flood Insurance in Florida

Why You Should Have Flood Insurance in Florida

Florida is infamous for its spontaneous rain showers and strong hurricanes. Whether our state experiences daily scattered showers or a category 5 hurricane, flooding can occur at any time and cause severe and costly damage to your home. Below are a few reasons why you should have flood insurance in Florida.

Flooding is Not Covered Under Your Standard Policy

A standard home, condo, or renter’s insurance policy typically does not include flood coverage. Homeowners insurance policies may protect you against water damage, such as a pipe leak or hole in your roof, but will not cover flood-inducing factors such as torrential rainfall or storm surge. To be protected in the event of a flood, you must purchase flood insurance. Flood Insurance can be obtained through private carriers or through the National Flood Insurance Program - NFIP.

The State’s Location and Terrain is Prone to Floods

Florida has mostly flat terrain and is predominately at low elevation and when waters rise, it can easily and quickly spread. With Florida having the second-longest coastline in the U.S. with 8,436 miles along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, the state is at an elevated risk of experiencing floods due to rising tides. It’s important to know your flood risk based on your location. Find your home’s flood zones designated with FEMA who rates a location’s flood risk from high to low. Use the FEMA flood map to find your area’s risk level. FEMA estimates nearly 2.5 million homes in Florida are in flood hazard zones, which is more than three times any other state in the U.S.

Flood Damage Happens Outside of High-Risk Zones

FEMA states, flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the U.S. and about 40% of all NFIP flood insurance claims come from outside high risk flood zones. Storms are becoming much more frequent, severe, and destructive. Homeowners should continue to be aware of their changing surroundings because new land use and community development are constantly affecting how water flows and drains. Protecting your home from the intensifying frequent storms requires the awareness of your surroundings, mitigation efforts, and flood insurance protection.

Florida Ranks High in Flooding & Damage

Five of Florida’s hurricanes rank in the top ten of being the most intense and having the costliest in damage according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - NOAA. Florida also experiences the most hurricane landfalls throughout the nation. Hurricanes bring with them most of the flooding and storm surge damage to homes, which can be a covered loss with flood insurance. Hurricane Irma alone brought widespread flooding throughout our state and caused an estimated $25-$38 billion in flood damages.
