Abandoned Pet Rescue

The Abandoned Pet Rescue is one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in South Florida. Since 1996, the Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit has cared for upwards of 10,000 dogs and cats by providing rehoming services, neutering procedures, and vaccinations.
Over the past five years, the Abandoned Pet Rescue has adopted out an average of 350 pets annually. The facility features six free-roaming cat rooms and an outdoor “catio,” allowing them to comfortably house up to 150 cats at once. For their canine residents, the shelter has air-conditioned kennels with access to an outdoor play yard, which allows them to accommodate up to 35 dogs at once.
Behind the scenes, the shelter is run by 18 staff members and 500 volunteers who work together to uphold the mission to “rehabilitate and rehome abandoned and neglected cats and dogs, while also promoting responsible pet ownership and advocating for animal welfare.”
This July, Florida Peninsula had the special opportunity to fundraise for the shelter thanks to the generosity of one of our own, Mike D. from our Analytics Team. Mike donated a bowling night at Lucky Strike to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.
Mike chose the Abandoned Pet Rescue because of his personal connection to their mission. As an animal lover and pet parent, he’s seen the difference that a compassionate shelter can make. “I wanted to support abandoned pets because when I was in college at the University of Florida, I adopted Sierra, a black lab mix, from a local pet rescue,” Mike shared. Sierra had been found on the side of the road in Gainesville, Florida, by a local shelter. Adopting Sierra gave her a second chance at life, and allowed her to accompany Mike through major milestones, from graduating college to starting a new life in South Florida, where he would go on to raise two daughters.
Mike has always had a soft spot for dogs and knew he wanted to support abandoned pets in the South Florida area. With help from his daughters, he researched local shelters and ultimately chose the Abandoned Pet Rescue for their commitment to being a 100% no-kill shelter.
Inspired by his experience, five teams banded together to Bowl for a Cause. Every pin knocked down was a small step closer toward a larger goal: giving abandoned pets a second chance at finding their forever homes.
Florida Peninsula is proud to support abandoned pets through local partnerships and fundraising initiatives. We are grateful for team members like Mike who inspire positive change within our community.
