Protecting Your Home from a Brush Fire

Thousands of acres of land and homes are destroyed each year in Florida from brush fires. Although brush fires can occur at any time, they are more common during the drier months of the year, making the official brush fire season from late February through May. Brush and wildfires can occur for many reasons including, lightning, controlled burning, arson, and accidents like a campfire or a lit cigarette.

Over the years we have seen an increased risk of wildfires in Florida. Although no home is fire-proof, there are steps you can take to protect your property from a brush fire. Here are a few tips:

  • Remove any dried or dead vegetation from your property.
  • Keep up with lawn maintenance by mowing and irrigating regularly.
  • Clear your gutters, eaves, and roof of debris.
  • Keep flammable liquids in a safe location.
  • Landscape your property with fire-resistant plants.

We hope you take these tips into consideration before a brush fire threatens your area. Remember, the safety of you and your family should be your number one priority in the event of a fire. Be sure you have an evacuation plan in place, and practice it often to be sure each member of the family is aware of what to do. As always, review your homeowners policy to be sure you have adequate coverage for your belongings and property. Should you need to make any changes or if you have any questions, contact your agent.
