What to do with Unwanted Holiday Gifts

Every year we find ourselves with a few unwanted gifts from well-meaning family and friends. Not wanting to hurt feelings or feel guilty, we tend to hold on to these presents generating clutter in our homes. After expressing your gratitude for your gift, here are a few plans to keep in mind on how to take care of unwanted gifts.

Exchange or Return Gifts

Gift receipt included or not, it’s perfectly acceptable to exchange the gift for something more useful for you, especially if the gifter included the gift receipt.  Most major stores accept returns if the item is unopened and undamaged, you could get a store credit or exchange it for an item of equal value.

Sell Gifts Online

Use sites like eBay, CraigsList or Amazon to sell unwanted items. Taking gifts like books you’ve already read, jewelry which might not suit you, or anything else of some value can help you get rid of unwanted gifts while adding a few dollars to your wallet.

Regift or Save it for Later

The best way to pass the kindness along is by regifting unwanted gifts. However, keep in mind who you’re regifting to, we don’t want to add to someone else’s clutter just to get rid of our own. You could even store the item away to regift it later on for someone’s birthday or special event.

Donate Your Gifts

By donating your gift, you can ensure someone will get good use out of your unwanted item. Drop off items at your closest thrift store, or give them to your favorite local charity who would accept gifts with open arms. Florida Peninsula supports several local charities, visit our Community Involvement page to see more.

Protect High-Value Gifts

It’s important to protect your valuables in the New Year, whether if it’s updating your policy or talking to your agent about what personal property is covered in your policy. There are many types of additional coverages Florida Peninsula offers which will keep your new high-value gifts protected.
