October 7-13, 2018 is National Fire Prevention Week. Founded by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Prevention Week serves to remind us of the importance of fire prevention education. According to the NFPA, an average of 358,500 home structure fires were responded to by U.S. fire departments between 2011- 2015. These fires caused $6.7 billion in damages and resulted in 12,300 injuries and 2,510 deaths.
The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “LOOK. LISTEN. LEARN. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere. ™” This campaign aims to educate on the three essential steps to take to prevent fires, and how to safely escape in the event of a fire.
“LOOK”: Identify the places a fire could start around your home.
“LISTEN”: Ensure you are able to hear a smoke alarm ringing from all areas of your home, as you may only have minutes to escape once your fire alarm goes off.

When it comes to fire safety, younger children need to be taught differently, based on their ways of thinking. Unsurprisingly, many children are fascinated with fire, and providing a fire safety lesson a must. Here are a few points to include in your lesson:
Teach kids never to play with matches, lighters or fireworks/sparklers: These things must always be supervised by an adult. It is important they know playing with these items can be dangerous and cause devastating loss to property and even people.
Make them aware of fire alarms: By pushing the “test” button on your fire alarm, your children will be aware of what your home’s fire alarm sounds like, and how to respond to one when there’s really a fire. Teach them to get low and get out. A child who is coached properly ahead of time will have a better chance to be safe.
